Let's Talk About How Drugs Killed My Soul

A raw, unfiltered memoir by Walter Mason

Let's Talk About It: Drugs Killed My Soul - book cover

From the founder of Addiction Killer β€” the story behind the brand.

The Story Nobody Wanted to Tell

Walter Mason grew up in Chicago watching addiction tear his family apart β€” piece by piece, memory by memory. Now, for the first time, he's putting it all on the page. No filters. No sugarcoating. Just the truth about what drugs do to a family, a childhood, and a soul β€” and the fight to take it all back.

This is more than a book. It's a lifeline for anyone still in the storm, and proof that you can come out the other side.

Here's a taste of where it all starts…

I was born in Chicago in 1985, to Gloria and Walter. My mother was a nurse β€” kind-hearted, hardworking, and beautiful. My father did odd jobs and factory work, always finding a way to keep food on the table. We didn't have much, but we had each other. Back then, that was enough.

But things changed when I was around four years old. A friend of my parents, a man named Randy, introduced them to cocaine. That's when the house started to fall apart, piece by piece.

At first, I didn't understand. I just knew that sometimes Mom and Dad acted different β€” their energy was off, their tempers quick. Nights got louder. The laughter that used to fill our home turned to shouting and silence. And before long, I learned what it meant to lose things.

I used to wake up and find my game systems, TVs, even my VCRs gone. Mom had sold them again. Every time, it was the same: she'd break down crying, telling me how ashamed she was, how she wanted to stop. And I believed her. Every single time, I believed her.

She tried to end her life more than once. I lost count of the times I came home to find her collapsed, bleeding, or shaking from seizures. Sometimes five times a week. I remember walking in from school one afternoon β€” the house was quiet, too quiet β€” and there she was, face down in a puddle of blood. I was just a kid, but those images burned themselves into my mind.

Even now, decades later, loud noises can bring it all back. The flashbacks. The helplessness. The fear. The smell of iron in the air.

That was the world I came from. The beginning of my story β€” one that started in love and ended in chaos, at least for a while.
